What’s on

The demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

As we woke up on Friday knowing that, for many of us this is the first that we are without our Queen, our sadness should be tempered by memories of the huge contribution she made to the history of our Nation, to the Commonwealth and to the World.

For millions of people she has been the one constant in their lives, a beacon of what is right and example to all who want to live a life of service to their fellow man.

For many leaders of nations she was a wise counsel and for our own Prime Ministers was the one person to whom they had to explain their actions!

Her Majesty the Queen was not born to the job she was given but she made it her own. Her place in history as a great Monarch is assured.

We say goodbye to the second Elizabethan era and welcome Charles the Third. God save the King.

Fantabulous Felixstowe Museum is open!

There’s so much to see and do at the museum this year. Throughout the season you can revisit (or visit?) the 1980s, the decade that brought us the mullet hairstyle, shoulder pads, shell suits, leg warmers, ‘Shaddap You Face’ and ‘The Empire Strike Back’ – and also Felixstowe Museum!  We first opened our doors in 1982.

For more information check out this year’s new exhibition, as featured on BBC Look East:   Frankie goes to Felixstowe

There’s also a new trail for all the family – The Race for Space – and this will run until the end of October.  Our other special events, for children and adults alike, are listed below and to find out about our new exhibitions check out  What’s new in ’22?

Stop Press:   We’ve added Saturdays to the days we are open and can now offer a Weekend Joint Ticket deal with Landguard Fort.  For details, follow this link    Opening hours & admissions

The office continues to be open four days a week for enquiries and research.  Contact us by email or phone.

As usual, there are also lots of great activities on the Landguard Peninsula this year.  Look below or check out Landguard Events 2022 for a complete listing.

Our evening talks (held in conjunction with the Felixstowe Family History Society) have now returned to our normal venue, Broadway House in Orwell Rd, Felixstowe, meeting on the second Wednesday of the month. Be sure to check the details below as some of these may be offered by Zoom.  All welcome.

Norman Jacobs on ‘Pie ‘N’ Mash  and Prefabs.’

The Blitz had made many families in the East End of London homeless. One solution was to erect prefabs on fields and open spaces to give temporary accommodation to those who had been bombed out. It was in one of these ‘modern’ boxes that young Norman Jacobs grew up through the 1950s and 1960s. In a lively, detailed and humorous picture of a postwar Hackney childhood, Norman takes us back to an age of rationing, bomb sites, street markets, colourful characters and camaraderie. And in reminiscing about stodgy school food, jumpers for goalposts, Listen with Mother, greyhound racing, pie ‘n’ mash, holiday camps, and the advent of American-style burger bars, he provides a glimpse into a way of life that has vanished for ever. Set against a backdrop of Rock ‘n’ Roll, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the assassination of President Kennedy, funny, poignant and sometimes sad, Norman’s is a story full of innocence and happiness that will take you back to the best of times – the days we thought would never end.

All welcome.  Doors open at 7pm.
